Periodontics

The Foundation of a Healthy Smile

Periodontics focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease. Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile, and we're here to help you maintain them.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease ranges from mild inflammation (gingivitis) to serious infection (periodontitis) that can damage soft tissue and destroy bone supporting your teeth.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums or teeth appearing longer
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Changes in your bite

Scaling and Root Planing

Deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces to promote healing.

Periodontal Maintenance

Specialized cleanings every 3-4 months to manage gum disease and prevent recurrence.

Gum Grafting

Surgical procedure to cover exposed roots and prevent further recession, protecting teeth and improving aesthetics. For gum grafting, we refer patients out to a periodontist (a gum specialist) to ensure you receive the highest level of specialized care.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is an advanced, minimally invasive option for treating gum disease. At this time, we do not yet offer laser therapy in our office — but we are committed to continually expanding our services to bring you the latest in dental care.

Prevention is Key

The best treatment for gum disease is prevention:

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth
  • Attend regular dental cleanings and exams
  • Don't smoke or use tobacco products
  • Maintain a healthy diet

Why Treat Gum Disease?

Untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss and has been linked to serious health conditions including:

  • Heart disease — bacteria from gum infection can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart
  • Diabetes — gum disease can make blood sugar harder to control
  • Failure of dental implants — active gum disease significantly increases the risk of implant failure
  • Respiratory problems and other systemic health issues
